**Dushanbe, Tajikistan** – The Grand Mufti of Tajikistan, Saidmukarram Abdulqodirzoda, was attacked yesterday evening at the city’s central mosque. The assailant, described as a “hooligan” by the Interior Ministry, injured the 61-year-old religious leader with a bladed weapon. The incident occurred after evening prayers at approximately 5:20 pm.
Abdulqodirzoda, elected by the state, is the head of Tajikistan’s Muslim community. He has held the position of Chairman of the Shuroi Ulamo (Council of Scholars) of the Islamic Center, the only fatwa-issuing body in Tajikistan, since 2010.
Police are investigating the attack and are searching for the assailant. The motivation behind the attack is yet to be determined.
