**Southampton, UK** – Two women have shared their harrowing experiences of being financially exploited by their partners, ultimately losing their homes. Emma and Lucy, who wished to remain anonymous, described how their partners used emotional manipulation to coerce them into paying off debts they incurred during the relationship.
Emma, who initially enjoyed a good income with her husband, found herself constantly struggling to manage his spending habits. She explained, “I lived in a world of constant stress, trying to earn as much as possible, only to see it disappear.” When she confronted him, she was met with accusations of being unreasonable and threats of abandonment.
Lucy, a mother who shared a home with her partner, faced similar challenges. Her partner racked up thousands of pounds in debt on a joint credit card, and she was forced to pay it off to avoid weeks of silence and emotional neglect from him. She described the situation as “a horrible atmosphere…they take it out on the children as well.”
Both women ultimately left their relationships, only to find themselves trapped in financial ruin. Emma lost her home, while Lucy is burdened with a mortgage she can’t afford, her credit rating destroyed.
The charity Surviving Economic Abuse estimates that 750,000 women in the UK have been financially abused by partners within the past two years. Sam Smethers, the charity’s interim chief executive, calls for stronger legal protection, urging the government to establish a task force and implement new laws to prevent abusers from weaponizing mortgage debt.
Smethers emphasizes the urgency of this issue, stating, “Survivors are doing everything they can to make ends meet, cutting back on essentials and borrowing money just to keep up with repayments. While banks can do more to help, only a law change can truly stop abusers from destroying lives.”
