Wed Sep 11 21:40:00 UTC 2024: ## SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn Mission Breaks Record, Reaching Farthest Point Since Apollo Era

**Cape Canaveral, FL -** A historic milestone was achieved early Wednesday morning as the SpaceX Dragon capsule carrying the Polaris Dawn mission reached an altitude of 1,400 kilometers above Earth, marking the farthest humans have traveled since the Apollo program over 50 years ago.

The four-person crew, composed of private citizens, launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The crew successfully completed their first day on orbit, engaging in various activities such as on-orbit meals, initial science and research, and testing Starlink capabilities.

The mission’s trajectory took it through the South Atlantic Anomaly, a region with a weaker magnetic field, presenting unique challenges for the crew and mission control. During its first orbit, the Dragon capsule reached an apogee of approximately 1,216 kilometers, setting a new record for the highest Dragon mission flown to date.

The crew is now preparing for a busy Flight Day 2, which will see the Dragon capsule raise itself to an elliptical orbit of 190 x 1,400 kilometers.

“Strive to greater heights, For a future brighter than the past, Waking up each morning inspired, To learn new secrets of the Universe!” tweeted Elon Musk, SpaceX CEO, in response to the mission’s achievement.

The Polaris Dawn mission is a significant step for private space exploration, demonstrating the growing potential for civilian participation in space endeavors. However, the mission has also drawn attention to tensions between SpaceX and the Biden administration, with Musk alleging the weaponization of federal agencies against his company.

Despite these challenges, the Polaris Dawn mission continues to push the boundaries of space exploration, inspiring future generations to reach for the stars.
