**Pretoria, South Africa** – South Africa has announced its intention to file a memorial document with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) next month, providing evidence to support its claim that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
The move follows a lawsuit initiated by South Africa in December against the Israeli government, alleging that Israel’s offensive in Gaza following Hamas’s attack in October 2022 is “genocidal in character.” South Africa, a long-standing advocate for Palestinian independence, accuses Israel of attempting to eliminate a significant portion of the Palestinian population.
The ICJ has already issued provisional orders, including one in May calling on Israel to halt its offensive in Rafah, but hostilities have continued. Despite these orders, South Africa maintains its lawsuit, which has been joined by several countries, including Nicaragua, Palestine, Türkiye, Spain, Mexico, Libya, and Colombia.
The ICJ has set an October 28 deadline for South Africa to present its arguments.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Israel is lobbying the US Congress to pressure South Africa into dropping the lawsuit. Israeli diplomats are reportedly pushing for legislation targeting South Africa on state and federal levels, hoping to convince Pretoria to pursue dialogue with Israel instead of pursuing legal action.
This development comes as the ongoing conflict in Gaza continues to escalate, with the death toll exceeding 40,000 Palestinians and 1,200 Israelis.
