**Chester, UK** – A new bar is set to open in the former Geek Retreat space on Watergate Street, following approval from Cheshire West and Chester Council. The new venue will be operated by Calum Adams, owner of the popular vegan restaurant Shrub, located on Eastgate Row.
The Geek Retreat, a part of a national chain, closed its doors in January 2023 after launching in April 2022. Before that, the space was occupied by betting offices for many years.
The new bar will offer food alongside drinks. Council case officer Helen Jameson said in a report recommending approval, that the proposed use would not generate significant noise due to the surrounding businesses and existing noise levels in the city center. However, conditions have been imposed regarding hours of operation and waste disposal to mitigate potential noise impacts on nearby residents.
The new establishment, with a yet-to-be-determined trading name, will be positioned as a “higher end drinking establishment,” according to a recent premises licence application.
