**Greater Noida, India:** Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated SEMICON India 2024, a major semiconductor industry event, signaling India’s rapid ascent as a global semiconductor powerhouse. The event, organized by SEMI, Messe Munchen India, and several government agencies, brought together industry leaders to address critical challenges like talent shortages and sustainability.

A key highlight was the launch of SEMI’s Workforce Development Program in India, aimed at bridging the projected talent gap of 250,000 to 300,000 professionals by 2027. The program will collaborate with educational institutions to create specialized curricula and skill development initiatives for roles in semiconductor design and manufacturing. This initiative seeks to equip India’s burgeoning engineering workforce with the skills needed for the fast-growing semiconductor industry.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized the critical role of the semiconductor industry in India’s technological progress and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering growth in this sector. Ajit Manocha, CEO of SEMI, highlighted India’s potential to become a semiconductor powerhouse in Asia, fueled by the global demand for semiconductors driven by AI and other emerging technologies.

SEMICON India 2024 also showcased the success of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), which has secured over $17 billion in investments for four semiconductor manufacturing facilities in India in the past 32 months. The event featured over 250 exhibitors, including major industry names like NXP, Foxconn, Renesas, and Applied Materials, highlighting the global interest in India’s semiconductor sector.

The event included discussions on various topics, from smart manufacturing and sustainability to advanced packaging, design, and flexible hybrid electronics.
