**OMAHA, NE** – A 14-year-old boy is facing serious charges after a shooting at Omaha’s Northwest High School Tuesday left a 15-year-old student critically injured. The shooting, which occurred just after midday, began as a physical altercation between the two boys.
According to court documents, the suspect, who was arrested a few blocks from the school, concealed a gun inside his hoodie and fired once, striking the victim in the stomach. Surveillance footage captured the incident, showing the suspect holding the gun before putting it back in his pocket and leaving the scene.
The victim, who remains in stable condition at an Omaha hospital, is facing additional surgeries.
The suspect’s attorney, citing the teen’s mother, claimed the 14-year-old was a victim of “continued and excessive bullying” at school and was in the process of being transferred to a different school. He argued that the shooting was not a random act but a result of the alleged bullying.
The suspect, charged as an adult, faces charges of first-degree felony assault, two weapons charges, and tampering with evidence. He was ordered held on a $275,000 bond and will be required to wear a GPS monitor if released. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 16th.
Following the shooting, Northwest High School was placed on lockdown while police secured the building. Students were gradually released to their families throughout the afternoon. Classes were cancelled Wednesday.
The Omaha Police Department is investigating multiple threats to other schools made on social media following the shooting. While none of these threats are believed to be credible, authorities have taken action against several students, including a 14-year-old receiving a long-term suspension, an 11-year-old arrest, and a 13-year-old being ticketed for their involvement in sending threats. Further arrests are expected.
This incident comes on the heels of last week’s school shooting in Georgia, which tragically claimed the lives of two teachers and two students. It also adds to a growing list of school shootings across the United States in recent years, highlighting the ongoing issue of gun violence and safety in schools.
