**Mumbai, India -** Abu Dhabi-based AI technology company G42, backed by Microsoft, has launched Nanda, a Hindi large language model (LLM) specifically designed for India. The model, named after the second-highest mountain peak in India, Nanda Devi, was unveiled at the UAE-India Business Forum in Mumbai.
Nanda is trained on a massive dataset of Hindi, English, and Hinglish languages, boasting 13 billion parameters and 2.13 trillion tokens. This makes it proficient in both Hindi and Hinglish, a hybrid language combining Romanized letters and Devanagari pronunciation.
G42 CEO Manu Kumar Jain emphasized the potential of Nanda to “get integrated into the fabric of India,” meeting sovereign requirements and facilitating large-scale technology initiatives. While the company has not yet disclosed specific use cases or a release timeline, Jain believes Nanda can empower India’s over half a billion Hindi speakers to leverage the power of generative AI.
This launch follows G42’s previous release of Jais, an open-source Arabic LLM, and reflects their commitment to developing AI models tailored to specific languages and regions. Microsoft’s recent $1.5 billion investment in G42 further underscores the growing importance of AI in the global tech landscape.
