**Imphal, Manipur:** Violence has once again gripped Manipur, pushing the state further into a spiral of unrest and endangering the fragile peace that had been sought. The latest surge in violence, fueled by the long-standing Kuki-Meitei conflict, has brought the region to the brink of chaos.
The violence, which initially erupted in May 2023 over the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status, has now transformed into a wider conflict. The situation remains grim, with over 250 lives lost, thousands of homes destroyed, and over 70,000 people displaced. Despite periods of relative calm, recent outbreaks have reignited anger and unrest, forcing the deployment of additional security forces.
Students, frustrated by the continuous conflict and lack of intervention, have taken to the streets, demanding the withdrawal of central forces and accusing both the Chief Minister and Prime Minister of negligence. The city of Imphal is marked by a palpable sense of fear, with the streets littered with burnt and damaged vehicles, schools and colleges closed, and internet services suspended. The security situation has worsened with recent attacks involving rocket launchers and grenades, raising concerns among security agencies.
To address the escalating crisis, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has deployed 16 battalions in Manipur, with two additional battalions recently assigned to strengthen security. These forces are receiving specialized training in internal security duties, logistics, equipment, and anti-drone technology.
The ongoing violence has left a trail of destruction and despair, with numerous families seeking refuge in neighboring states or living in relief camps. The conflict has plunged Manipur into a state of uncertainty, leaving the future of the state hanging in the balance.
