**New Delhi:** A leading neurologist has cautioned about the potential link between excessive mobile phone use and an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Dr. Sudhir Kumar of Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, citing a recent Chinese study, has advised limiting mobile phone usage to safeguard heart health.

The study, published in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology, analyzed data from over 444,000 individuals and found a correlation between weekly mobile phone usage time and incident CVD risk. The researchers observed a significantly higher risk of CVD among those using their phones for more than an hour per week compared to those using them less than an hour.

Dr. Kumar explained that the study points to several factors contributing to this increased risk. Excessive mobile phone usage can lead to poor sleep, psychological distress, and neuroticism, all of which negatively impact heart health. Additionally, the radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMFs) emitted by mobile phones can disrupt the body’s hormonal balance, induce inflammation, and cause oxidative stress, ultimately impacting the cardiovascular system.

He stressed the importance of taking steps to mitigate the risk, recommending limiting the duration of calls, prioritizing sleep, managing stress levels, and quitting smoking. He also highlighted that pre-existing conditions like diabetes and smoking further amplify the risk of CVDs.

The news of this potential link comes amidst a global surge in CVDs, with the World Heart Federation reporting a significant increase in deaths from CVDs globally from 1990 to 2021. As mobile phone use continues to rise worldwide, this study sheds light on a crucial factor to consider for maintaining cardiovascular health.
