Wed Sep 11 21:40:00 UTC 2024: ## Fairview Park Renovations Delayed by Homeless Encampment

**St. Catharines, ON** – The City of St. Catharines’ ambitious $12-million renovation plan for Fairview Park has hit a snag: homeless encampments currently residing in the park. The proposed revitalization, including a skate park, multi-use courts, and a new playground, has been put on hold until the encampment situation is resolved.

Council approved the “Fairview Park Community Vision Master Plan,” which envisions transforming the park into a vibrant community space with amenities for all ages. However, several council members expressed concerns about the encampment’s impact on the project.

“Spending a lot of money and putting in amenities in the park is not going to be a solution to the encampment problem,” said Councillor Bruce Williamson, who voted against the plan. “We have to deal with the encampment problem first, before we initiate.”

Councillor Carlos Garcia echoed those sentiments, adding an amendment to the motion stating that work would not commence until the encampment situation is resolved.

Mayor Mat Siscoe confirmed that no construction work would begin while the encampment remains in place.

While the project is delayed, the city is inviting residents to provide feedback on the final design at an open house scheduled for April 3.

The plan for Fairview Park has generated considerable enthusiasm, with many looking forward to its potential to revitalize the area. However, the city’s immediate focus remains on addressing the homeless situation before any construction begins.
