Wed Sep 11 21:40:00 UTC 2024: ## Bear Spray Explosion Injures Recycling Staff in Oliver, Town Issues Warning

The Town of Oliver is urging residents to be mindful of what they put in their recycling bins after a recent incident involving a bear spray canister that exploded in a sorting facility, causing significant injuries to staff.

The incident, along with a recent fire suspected to have been caused by a discarded battery, prompted a warning from the Town, citing an increase in hazardous materials found in curbside recycling. These materials, often associated with outdoor activities like camping and hiking, include propane tanks, bear spray canisters, and battery-powered devices like lanterns and bug zappers.

“These items can cause serious harm to recycling staff and facilities,” said the Town of Oliver in a social media post. They emphasized the importance of taking precautions and properly disposing of hazardous materials at designated drop-off locations.

RecycleBC, the provincial recycling agency, has provided information on proper disposal methods for hazardous materials. Residents are urged to visit their website for further details and to ensure their recycling bins contain only acceptable materials.
