**LONDON** – Brazil is experiencing a surge in British tourists, with a remarkable 18% increase in visitor numbers during the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year. The country’s allure, encompassing its rich culture, sunny weather, and stunning beaches, attracted 81,200 British visitors, up from 69,000 in 2023.
Research by Brazil’s tourism office Embratur reveals the driving factors behind this surge: 42% of British tourists are drawn to Brazil’s cultural attractions, 38% are seeking its favorable weather conditions, and 31% are on the hunt for beach and sun holidays. Other key motivators include gastronomy (22%), nature (20%), the warmth of Brazilian people (16%), and business (3%).
Capitalizing on this rising interest, British Airways is expanding its flight offerings between Heathrow and Sao Paulo, increasing frequencies from daily to 10 weekly flights starting October 29. This boost in capacity, representing a 28% increase compared to last winter, will be facilitated by three additional weekly flights operated by Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, in addition to their existing Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. All BA flights to Sao Paulo will operate from Heathrow Terminal 5.
BA is also bolstering its capacity between Heathrow, Rio de Janeiro, and Buenos Aires by 22%, effective from the same date, using its A350-1000 aircraft.
Brazil’s tourism minister Celso Sabino expressed optimism about the current trend, stating, “In 2023, we received a total of 5.9 million international tourists, and in the first seven months of this year, we have already registered four million. This indicates a strong possibility of reaching a new record of at least seven million international visitors to various Brazilian cities, one of the federal government’s key objectives for Brazilian tourism.”
