The BBC’s coverage of the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas has come under fire, prompting calls for a comprehensive review of the corporation’s reporting on the Middle East.
Samir Shah, the BBC’s chairman, has acknowledged the “very strong emotions on both sides” of the conflict and stated that the Israel-Gaza story should be the subject of the next thematic review conducted by the BBC. This call for a review comes in the wake of a report by British lawyer Trevor Asserson, who claimed the BBC had downplayed the terrorism of Hamas and broken its own editorial guidelines more than 1500 times.
While the BBC has expressed “serious questions” about the methodology of Asserson’s report, the corporation has acknowledged the significant number of complaints received about its coverage of the conflict. BBC Director-General Tim Davie has assured the public that the corporation takes all complaints seriously and has already taken disciplinary action in response to issues raised regarding the BBC Arabic service.
Despite the criticisms, Davie maintains that the BBC is doing “a very good job” overall and that its research shows a positive public response to its coverage. However, he acknowledges that “that doesn’t mean we are perfect” and the corporation will continue to review and improve its reporting on the complex and sensitive issue of the Israel-Gaza conflict.
