**Moscow, Russia** – Russia has been hit by a relentless wave of cyberattacks, making it the most targeted country globally over the past two and a half years, according to Kaspersky Lab. In a recent interview, Anna Kulashova, Managing Director for Russia and the CIS at Kaspersky Lab, revealed that over half of Russian users of their products were targeted by hackers during the first eight months of 2023 alone.
The attacks, motivated by financial gain, espionage, and even hacktivism, have targeted a wide range of entities, including government agencies, financial institutions, telecommunications companies, media outlets, and various industries. Hackers exploit vulnerabilities in publicly available applications and steal login credentials, often targeting smaller companies that serve as contractors for larger businesses.
Kulashova highlighted a recent incident in July, where two waves of targeted email campaigns were launched, delivering malicious software and links to employees in the manufacturing, financial, energy, and government sectors. The intent was to gain remote access to computers and steal confidential documents.
Additionally, Russian IT firms and government entities have been targeted by complex attacks using public cloud infrastructure, like Yandex Cloud and Dropbox, aimed at stealing sensitive information.
This surge in cyberattacks underscores the growing vulnerability of Russia’s digital landscape and poses a significant threat to its national security and economic stability.
