Atlanta, GA – Walt Ehmer, president and CEO of Waffle House, passed away on Sept. 6 after a long illness, according to the company and his alma mater, Georgia Tech University. He was 58.

Ehmer, known for his down-to-earth leadership style and commitment to the community, joined Waffle House in 1992, becoming president in 2006 and CEO in 2012. He was a beloved figure within the company, often visiting restaurants to greet patrons and associates firsthand.

Ehmer was also a dedicated community advocate, serving on the boards of the Atlanta Police Foundation, Aaron’s, the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Foundation, and the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce.

“Walt was a dedicated leader, tireless advocate for public safety, and an unwavering supporter of our mission,” said the Atlanta Police Foundation in a statement.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens also expressed his condolences, praising Ehmer’s leadership, dedication and warmth.

Ehmer is survived by his wife, Kara, and children Gregory, Anna and Lesley, all graduates of Georgia Tech.

Waffle House is renowned for its 24-hour service, often serving as an informal indicator of the severity of weather events in the South. Ehmer famously spoke about the chain’s commitment to always being open, saying, “I’m a product of our culture at Waffle House and that’s to lead from the front.”

The Waffle House family has expressed their deep sadness over Ehmer’s passing, and plans to share more details about his 30-year career with the company in the coming days.
