Tue Sep 10 15:22:56 UTC 2024: ## UK Prisons Release Thousands Early to Combat Overcrowding
**London, UK** – In a bid to alleviate severe overcrowding in British prisons, the Labour government has initiated a plan to release thousands of offenders early. The move, described as an attempt to “avert a disaster” by Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood, will see 5,500 prisoners freed in September and October alone. Over 1,700 inmates were released on Tuesday, with more expected to follow.
The decision comes as the prison population reached a record high of 88,521 last week. This surge in numbers, attributed to the previous Conservative government’s failure to address prison capacity, has left jails “on the point of collapse,” according to Mahmood.
The early release scheme, which primarily targets those serving short sentences for non-violent offenses, aims to address shortcomings of a previous program that saw prisoners released with only a day’s notice. This time, probation services will have sufficient time to prepare for the release and monitoring of offenders.
However, the move has sparked concerns from some quarters. Chief Inspector of Prisons Charlie Taylor voiced his apprehension, labeling the plan “risky” and expressing fears of potential “mayhem in communities.” Similarly, Chief Inspector of Probation Martin Jones expressed certainty that some released prisoners will reoffend.
The new scheme excludes those convicted of violent, sexual, or terrorism-related offenses. Prisoners serving sentences of four years or less may be eligible for release after serving 40% of their term.
Amidst the crisis, the British Ministry of Justice has been exploring the option of sending some prisoners to serve their sentences in Estonian prisons. While Estonia, known for its low crime rate, has offered to rent out prison space, British officials remain concerned about the potential high cost of the proposal.
With the British prison population projected to reach between 94,600 and 114,800 by 2028, the UK government faces a pressing challenge in managing its prison system and mitigating the risks associated with early release programs.
