Tue Sep 10 17:38:58 UTC 2024: ## Scottish Rugby Star Emma Wassell Undergoes Surgery After Tumour Diagnosis
**CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA** – Scotland’s star lock, Emma Wassell, has been forced to withdraw from the upcoming WXV 2 tournament after being diagnosed with a chest tumour requiring surgery. The 29-year-old, who plays for Loughborough Lightning, has been a key player for Scotland with 67 caps and a vital presence in Bryan Easson’s squad.
Wassell, who had previously missed matches earlier this year following the passing of her mother, expressed her disappointment about missing another opportunity to play for Scotland but emphasized her commitment to recovery.
“Unfortunately, rugby has now been put on hold for a while as I will get surgery to remove the tumour,” she said in a statement released by Scottish Rugby. “But I will be doing everything I can to return in 2025. To miss another opportunity to be back playing in blue has been a really tough one to take, especially after my year, but that truly is a testament to the team we have built.”
Wassell also expressed gratitude for the support she has received from her teammates and loved ones during this difficult period.
“I honestly don’t have the words right now to describe the support I’ve had during this time, but I am beyond blessed with the incredible people I have in my life,” she said. “Mum left me in good hands and I will forever be grateful to every single one of you who made sure I never felt alone in any of this.”
Saracens’ Louise McMillan will replace Wassell in the Scottish squad for the WXV 2 tournament, which kicks off on September 27th in Cape Town. Scotland will face Australia, Italy, Japan, hosts South Africa, and Wales in the second tier of the competition.
Scottish Rugby and fans alike have wished Wassell a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing her back on the pitch in 2025.
