**Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu:** TP Solar Ltd., a subsidiary of Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd. (TPREL), has announced the commencement of commercial production from its 2GW solar cell line at its manufacturing facility in Tirunelveli. This facility, hailed as “the country’s largest single-location solar cell and module plant,” is now fully operational with both cell and module production lines running.
The facility’s solar cell production, currently at 2GW capacity, will bolster Tata Power’s ability to meet the growing demand for domestically produced solar components, particularly for large-scale projects. The plant is expected to reach peak production within the next few months as the remaining 2GW capacity is added over the next 4-6 weeks.
The Tirunelveli plant, boasting a total cell and module manufacturing capacity of 4.3GW, began producing solar modules in October 2023 and has already manufactured 1250MW of modules. Tata Power has invested ₹4,300 crore in this facility and received a $425 million funding commitment from the US International Development Finance Corporation in September 2023.
The solar cells and modules produced at the Tamil Nadu facility will initially supply Tata Power’s ongoing projects, strengthening its supply chain. The company also plans to explore opportunities for wider market distribution in the future.
The modules produced at the plant are already on the “approved list of models and manufacturers” (ALMM), a legal requirement for module sales in India. Tata Power is confident its cells will also meet the ALMM criteria. This significant investment in domestic solar manufacturing signifies Tata Power’s commitment to furthering India’s renewable energy goals and strengthening its presence in the rapidly growing solar sector.
