Tue Sep 10 17:53:00 UTC 2024: ## Sony Unveils PlayStation 5 Pro: A $700 Console Aiming for the Best of Both Worlds

Sony has officially announced the PlayStation 5 Pro, a mid-generation refresh of their flagship console, aiming to offer gamers the ultimate experience with high frame rates and exceptional image quality.

The PS5 Pro, priced at $699, boasts a 2TB SSD and significant hardware upgrades, including a 45% increase in graphics rendering power and enhanced ray tracing capabilities. The console is designed to eliminate the common trade-off between frame rate and image quality, allowing games to run at high frame rates without compromising visuals.

While the PS5 Pro will run the same games as the base model, it promises to enhance performance with features like PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, Sony’s version of Nvidia DLSS, which uses AI to upscale images. Several games, including The Last of Us Part II, Hogwarts Legacy, and Gran Turismo 7, have been confirmed to receive patches to take advantage of these enhancements.

The new console also supports Wi-Fi 7 and 8K resolution, although the removal of the 8K sticker from the original PS5 packaging raises questions about the practical significance of this feature.

However, the PS5 Pro’s high price tag and the absence of a built-in optical drive may pose challenges for its success. While Sony claims the console delivers the best of both worlds, its value proposition remains uncertain, particularly considering the price of the separately sold disc drive ($79).

Pre-orders for the PS5 Pro open on September 26th, and the console will begin shipping on November 7th.
