Mon Sep 09 15:59:17 UTC 2024: ## Russia Aims to Boost LNG Exports Despite US Sanctions, Relying on Arctic LNG 2
**Moscow, Russia** – Despite facing US sanctions, Russia is planning to significantly increase its liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports, with a target of 35.2 million tons this year, according to a new government document. This ambitious goal would largely rely on the Arctic LNG 2 project, which has been specifically targeted by Washington in its efforts to restrict Kremlin revenue streams.
The US and its allies are seeking to curb Russia’s energy exports in response to the war in Ukraine. The sanctions imposed on Arctic LNG 2, which began operations in late 2023, include targeting the tankers used for transport, making it challenging for the plant to export its output.
Russia has responded by building a smaller fleet of specialized LNG vessels, but the existing fleet lacks the ice-breaking capabilities required for operating in the Arctic beyond the summer months.
To meet its ambitious export targets, Russia would need to ramp up production at Arctic LNG 2, which is currently inactive. The country has also outlined plans to further boost LNG exports to 40 million tons in 2025 and 45.2 million tons in 2026, contingent on the construction of additional facilities at Arctic LNG 2.
Reaching its ultimate goal of 103.2 million tons in LNG exports by 2030 would necessitate significant expansion of its LNG production infrastructure.
This news comes amidst ongoing tensions between Russia and the West over the war in Ukraine, highlighting the Kremlin’s continued efforts to maintain energy exports despite international pressure.
