**PETALING JAYA** – With an extreme drought predicted to hit Peninsular Malaysia starting next year and lasting for a decade, experts are sounding the alarm on the need for urgent action to secure the nation’s food supply. A report by the National Water Research Institute of Malaysia (Nahrim) from four years ago forecasted this prolonged drought, highlighting the potential for severe consequences if proper strategies aren’t implemented.
Concerns about food security are already surfacing. In July, the Malaysian Padi Farmers Brotherhood Organisation (Pesawah) reported that farmers in Kedah may be forced to halt rice planting due to extreme weather and water scarcity.
Experts emphasize the importance of individual preparedness, urging Malaysians to acquire crop planting skills to ensure food security for their families. Prof Emeritus Dr Barjoyai Bardai, an economist, advocates for self-sufficiency through small-scale agriculture and the reintroduction of nutritious traditional crops like ulam, which have been neglected. He stresses the crucial role of government support in educating the public and providing technological advancements for enhanced crop productivity.
Nurfitri Amir Muhammad, chief coordinator of the Malaysian Food Security and Sovereignty Forum, echoes the need for public awareness and education on agricultural practices, noting that decades of industrialization have led to a disconnect between Malaysians and basic farming skills. He highlights the potential for urban dwellers to cultivate even in limited spaces, emphasizing that reintegrating agriculture into everyday life is essential.
While government initiatives and NGO programs exist to promote agricultural knowledge, experts urge for a nationwide campaign to raise awareness and encourage active participation in sustainable farming. Events like the upcoming Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism expo (MAHA 2024) offer platforms for individuals to learn more about sustainable practices.
The experts warn that inaction could lead to severe food shortages, similar to the 1997-1998 drought that resulted in a water crisis, scheduled rationing, and disruptions to daily life.
As the country approaches this potential crisis, the need for immediate and decisive action on food security is paramount.
