**Bengaluru, India** – A new study published in South Asia Research sheds light on the often-overlooked challenges faced by working mothers in Bengaluru. Conducted by researchers Jagriti Gangopadhyay and Komal Arcot, the study explores the complex postnatal experiences of a specific class of working mothers in the city.

Through in-depth interviews, the research reveals that the postnatal experience of these mothers is heavily influenced by social and cultural factors. The study found that after childbirth, the focus shifts entirely to the baby, leaving the mother with limited emotional support from her spouse, family, or social network.

Furthermore, the study highlights a critical issue: working mothers are often criticized for prioritizing their careers over their perceived “motherhood responsibilities.” This societal pressure adds to the already existing mental stress and emotional strain experienced by these women.

The study’s findings offer a valuable glimpse into the mental health struggles of working mothers in urban India, particularly those in privileged classes. By expanding the scholarship on postnatal experiences, the research emphasizes the need for greater understanding and support for these mothers as they navigate the complex demands of motherhood and work.
