**UNITED NATIONS** – The Palestinians have submitted a draft UN resolution calling for Israel’s immediate withdrawal from both Gaza and the West Bank within six months. This follows a July ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) declaring Israel’s presence in the territories unlawful and demanding its end.
The proposed resolution, if passed by the General Assembly, would carry no legal weight, but its level of support would serve as a reflection of global opinion. It demands Israel’s compliance with international law, including the immediate withdrawal of all military forces from the Palestinian territories.
Furthermore, the draft calls for an end to Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank, including the dismantling of the separation barrier and the evacuation of all settlers. It also demands the return of all Palestinians displaced during Israel’s occupation and reparations for damages caused by Israel’s actions.
The resolution comes amidst escalating violence in both Gaza and the West Bank. Israel’s military offensive in Gaza, triggered by Hamas attacks in October 2022, has entered its eleventh month, resulting in over 40,900 Palestinian casualties and widespread destruction. Meanwhile, settler violence and Israeli military raids in the West Bank have intensified, claiming the lives of 692 Palestinians.
The proposal, which is expected to be voted on before the General Assembly’s annual high-level meetings begin on September 22nd, has drawn strong condemnation from Israel. Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon labelled the resolution a “reward for terrorism” and called for its rejection.
The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the importance of implementing ICJ rulings, stating that the decision on the resolution ultimately lies with the 193 member nations.
The Palestinians have expressed frustration with the ongoing situation and are seeking a decisive response from the international community. They are pushing for accountability for Israel’s alleged violations of international law, including sanctions against individuals responsible for maintaining Israel’s presence in the territories and a halt to arms exports to Israel.
