**Hampton Beach, NH** – New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu sprang into action on Sunday, performing the Heimlich maneuver on a contestant choking during a lobster roll eating contest at the Hampton Beach Seafood Festival.
Christian Moreno, a participant from Nashua, was attempting to consume 20 lobster rolls in 10 minutes when he began choking after his second roll. Governor Sununu, who was nearby after addressing the crowd, noticed Moreno’s distress and immediately intervened, administering several abdominal thrusts before first responders took over.
Moreno, unaware of his rescuer’s identity at the time, recovered and resumed the competition, ultimately finishing nine rolls. He did not win the contest, but expressed gratitude to his unknown savior.
“My counter came up to me and made a joke, saying, ‘I bet nobody else can say they’ve gotten the Heimlich from the governor before,'” Moreno said. “I looked at him and was just like, that was… that was the governor?”
Governor Sununu, who is not seeking reelection this year, downplayed his heroics, stating, “It was crazy because it wasn’t so much the jumping in and doing it—that was wild in itself—but there was so much commotion.”
The incident occurred amidst the 2024 election cycle, where New Hampshire remains a key battleground state, despite leaning Democratic in recent years. This year, the race for the White House pits Republican nominee Donald Trump against Democratic nominee Kamala Harris.
