**LAWRENCE, MA** – Cristian Montero, 35, has been charged with the murder of his neighbor, Carol Flaz-Burgos, 38. Montero was initially arrested last week for misleading police in the investigation of Flaz-Burgos’ disappearance on August 31st.
Flaz-Burgos, a mother of two, was last seen on surveillance video leaving her apartment at 590 Broadway on August 31st. She was found dead in a wooded area near Kenoza Lake reservoir in Haverhill on September 3rd.
Investigators found that Montero left his own apartment around the same time Flaz-Burgos was last seen, pulling a wagon or beach cart that appeared to be filled with clothes. Further investigation revealed a connection between Montero’s movements and Flaz-Burgos’ cell phone data, leading authorities to Haverhill.
Montero was arraigned on the murder charge on Wednesday in Lawrence District Court. The motive behind the killing and the relationship between Montero and Flaz-Burgos remain unclear. An autopsy is still pending to determine the manner of death.
Flaz-Burgos was a well-liked home health aide and lived in the apartment with her two children, ages 9 and 11. Her children contacted their grandparents when she did not return home on Saturday.
Montero is being held without bail after being arraigned on the charge of misleading a police investigation last week. He will now face arraignment on the murder charge.
