Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, has been hit by severe flooding, leaving many homes submerged and displacing residents. The flooding, which began after the Alau Dam overflowed, has also led to the temporary closure of the University of Maiduguri.
Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, has issued an urgent call for federal intervention to assist the state government in providing relief to the affected residents.
“The level of damage is very bad,” stated Senator Ndume, who has just returned from Borno. “Homes, institutions, government agencies, and other businesses have been submerged in the flood. Many people are trapped and are trying to evacuate.”
Ndume expressed concern that the situation could worsen without immediate federal support. He has also appealed to international partners and development agencies to assist in the relief efforts.
The Borno State government has already activated its emergency response mechanisms, providing support to those displaced by the flood. However, the senator emphasized that the scale of the damage is beyond the state’s capacity to handle alone.
The university management announced the temporary closure of the University of Maiduguri, citing the severity of the flood. The institution expressed sympathy for staff and students affected by the disaster.
Senator Ndume urged Nigerians to pray for the victims of the flooding and called for proactive measures to prevent similar events in the future.
