Mon Sep 09 15:48:10 UTC 2024: ## Venezuelan Opposition Candidate Flees Country Amid Crackdown

**Madrid, Spain** – Edmundo González, a former presidential candidate in Venezuela’s disputed July 28th election, has arrived in Spain seeking asylum. González, who replaced Maria Corina Machado on the ballot after she was barred from running, claims he was forced to flee due to threats and pressure from the government of President Nicolás Maduro.

González, a 75-year-old former diplomat, claims he won the election, which was declared by Maduro’s loyalist electoral panel in his favor without any evidence. In an audio message, González said his departure was a result of coercion and threats, but he remains committed to the fight for democracy in Venezuela.

Machado, the opposition leader, has asserted that González will continue his fight from abroad and will return for the January 10th presidential inauguration. However, González’s unexpected departure is seen as a major blow to the Venezuelan opposition, as many had placed their hopes in his campaign.

González joins a growing number of opposition figures who have fled the country to escape Maduro’s crackdown, which has seen the arrest of over 2,000 people, including many opposition activists and protesters.

Francisco Rodríguez, an international affairs professor at the University of Denver, commented that the government’s strategy is to force its critics to flee, then portray them as unwilling or unable to fight.

With Maduro firmly in power and international efforts to broker a resolution stalled, the Venezuelan opposition faces an increasingly difficult path toward political change.
