**Omaha, Nebraska** – A 14-year-old student at Northwest High School was shot and critically injured on Tuesday, September 10th, 2024, in a shooting incident that sent the school into lockdown. Omaha Police Department swiftly apprehended the alleged shooter, also a 14-year-old Northwest student, within 30 minutes of the incident.

The shooting occurred around 12:25 p.m. inside the school. The victim was taken to Nebraska Medicine in critical condition, but is now reportedly stable.

Following the incident, the school was immediately placed on lockdown, and students and families were reunited at the school’s football stadium by 3:30 p.m. The school will be closed for students on Wednesday, Sept. 11th, as a non-student day to allow staff and students to process the traumatic event.

Initial investigations suggest the shooting stemmed from an altercation between the two students. The Omaha Police Department has confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community.

“This was traumatic for everyone at the school and the parents of students at Northwest,” said Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen in a statement. “We are especially grateful for the swift action by local and state law enforcement to get to the scene and also secure a suspect.”

The incident has prompted widespread concern and calls for action. The Nebraska chapters of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, part of the Everytown for Gun Safety’s network, released statements expressing their outrage and frustration with gun violence in schools.

This incident comes amidst a disturbing trend of school shootings across the nation. The investigation into the Northwest High School shooting is ongoing.
