Tue Sep 10 15:08:00 UTC 2024: ## Senior Lawyer Framed and Remanded in Enugu Over Town Union Dispute

**Enugu, Nigeria** – A prominent Lagos-based lawyer, Vincent Okafor Esq., has been arrested and remanded in prison custody on charges of promoting local war in his hometown, Agunese Mmaku community in Enugu State. The charges, which allege Okafor led an attack on the traditional ruler, Igwe Nevobasi, and community members, are widely believed to be a fabrication orchestrated by the traditional ruler to silence his political opponents.

Okafor, a lawyer with over 30 years of experience, was apprehended last Thursday and brought to Enugu, where he was arraigned on three counts of felony and carrying out a warlike undertaking. The Magistrate Court, lacking jurisdiction, remanded him in prison custody.

Sources familiar with the case allege that the charges are a deliberate attempt to keep Okafor detained during the court vacation period. They claim the traditional ruler, Igwe Nevobasi, is using his influence to suppress opposition in the upcoming town union election. When it became evident that Nevobasi’s preferred candidate would lose the election, the traditional ruler allegedly intervened and resorted to intimidation tactics, using security operatives to harass opponents.

This is not the first instance of this tactic. Two other opponents of the traditional ruler, Mr. Theophilus Chukwu and Mr. David Okeke, were arrested and remanded in prison custody under similar charges three months ago.

Sources maintain that Okafor’s arrest is a deliberate act of intimidation, as he poses no threat and has no record of violence. The charge sheet accuses Okafor of leading an attack on Igwe Nevobasi and community members with firearms and other weapons.

The incident highlights a pattern of alleged intimidation and abuse of power by the traditional ruler in an attempt to control the town union election. Critics argue that the traditional ruler is violating the law by interfering in the election process, which is under the purview of the Ministry of Rural Development.

Despite the serious allegations against him, Igwe Nevobasi has yet to comment on the matter. Efforts to reach the Enugu State Police Command for comment have also been unsuccessful.

This case raises concerns about the misuse of legal processes for political gain and the need for thorough investigations to ensure the fair treatment of those accused.
