**LOS ANGELES, CA -** Veteran actress Kathy Bates, known for her roles in films like “Titanic” and “Misery,” has announced her retirement from acting after starring in the upcoming CBS reboot of “Matlock.” The 76-year-old Oscar winner revealed her plans in an interview with the New York Times, stating that she’s “ready to say goodbye to Hollywood.”
Bates, who won an Academy Award for her role in “Misery,” explained that she initially planned to retire last year following a difficult film shoot that left her emotionally drained. However, she was drawn back to the world of acting after reading the script for the “Matlock” reboot, a gender-flipped remake of the original 1986-1995 legal drama series.
“This is my last dance,” she said, adding, “Everything I’ve prayed for, worked for, clawed my way up for, I am suddenly able to be asked to use all of it… And it’s exhausting.”
Bates, who has been nominated for 14 Emmy Awards and has won two for her roles in “Two and a Half Men” and “American Horror Story,” expressed a sense of exhaustion and a desire to reclaim her life. “It becomes my life,” she said about acting. “Sometimes I get jealous of having this talent. Because I can’t hold it back, and I just want my life.”
The “Matlock” reboot, starring Bates alongside Jason Ritter, David Del Rio, and Leah Lewis, premieres on September 22nd on CBS and will also be available to stream on Paramount+.
