The Indian government has raked in significant revenue from online gaming in the six months since implementing a controversial 28% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on the industry. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman revealed a staggering 412% increase in revenue from online gaming, jumping from Rs. 1,349 crore in the six months prior to the tax hike to Rs. 6,909 crore between October 2023 and March 2024.
This surge in revenue comes after the government classified online games like poker and rummy as gambling, equating them with activities like horse racing and casinos. The move sparked protests from the industry, with over 100 companies warning of potential industry collapse. Concerns included driving users towards offshore gambling operators and ultimately hindering both revenue generation and legitimate industry growth.
However, the government has remained unmoved by industry concerns. Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda refuted claims of industry demise, stating that companies were actually declaring higher revenues, with some reporting increases of up to three or four times. He dismissed any need to revise the GST levy, stating that the system is working well and the sector’s turnover has increased.
Despite industry concerns, the government’s decision to impose a higher GST on online gaming appears to be paying off, at least in terms of revenue. The long-term impact on the industry and its potential to drive users towards unregulated offshore markets remains to be seen.
