India is making significant strides in its quest to become a global semiconductor hub, with a flurry of recent developments showcasing strong domestic and international interest.
The Indian government has approved a chipmaking facility proposed by Kaynes Semicon, a subsidiary of Kaynes Technology, in Sanand, Gujarat. This facility will contribute to the burgeoning semiconductor ecosystem in the country. Notably, Kaynes Semicon has also reiterated its commitment to establishing an advanced electronics manufacturing facility in Hyderabad, Telangana.
Further cementing India’s position as a prime destination for semiconductor manufacturing, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin signed MoUs with US firms, including Applied Materials, during a recent US tour aimed at attracting investments. These partnerships aim to establish Tamil Nadu as a prominent electronics powerhouse.
Meanwhile, Indian startups are making their mark on the global stage. Silizium Circuits and Calligo Technologies, two Indian startups, showcased their innovations at Semicon Taiwan 2024, demonstrating the growing capabilities within the Indian semiconductor sector.
In another significant development, India-based IC design house BigEndian Semiconductors secured US$3 million in funding and aims to partner with Taiwan-based UMC to launch security chips, highlighting the emergence of a vibrant local semiconductor ecosystem.
These developments point to a promising future for India’s semiconductor industry, with the government’s commitment, robust private sector investment, and the emergence of innovative startups driving growth and creating a strong foundation for the country’s technological future.
