Hyderabad, Telangana – Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy inaugurated the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHT) on Monday, offering local training in handloom techniques. Previously, aspiring weavers had to travel to neighboring states like Odisha and Andhra Pradesh for such education.
The institute, named after Konda Laxman Bapuji, a prominent freedom fighter who advocated for Telangana’s statehood, will provide advanced training and education in various handloom techniques. Reddy stated that the institute’s establishment is a direct result of the Telangana government’s successful appeal to the central government.
Reddy further highlighted the state government’s commitment to supporting the handloom industry. This includes clearing ₹290 crore in dues owed to weavers, distributing two sarees free of cost to each of the 63 lakh Self Help Group members annually, and waiving ₹30 crore in handloom loans. Additionally, the government has placed an order for 1.30 crore sarees to be manufactured by weavers each year.
The IIHT campus will be located within the Skill University, which was recently established to provide skill training to students across the state. The government plans to complete the institute’s construction next year.
