Lucknow: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has launched a scathing attack on the Uttar Pradesh government, accusing it of targeting minorities in alleged fake encounters. Yadav claims that 60% of those killed in gunfights with police during the BJP’s rule belong to the “PDA” – a coalition of “Pichde, Dalit and Alpsankhyak” communities (backward classes, Dalits, and minorities).
Yadav’s statement comes in the wake of the recent killing of Mangesh Yadav, a suspect in a robbery case, who died in a police encounter. Yadav has called the encounter “fake” and alleges it was carried out based on the victim’s caste.
In a series of posts on X, formerly known as Twitter, Yadav presented data showing that a disproportionate number of those killed in encounters belong to the PDA. The data, however, lacks a specific source.
UP Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar has refuted Yadav’s allegations, stating that the state police operate impartially and do not engage in such practices. He insists that police action is solely based on the circumstances of each case.
The latest accusations from Yadav further fuel the ongoing debate surrounding alleged extrajudicial killings in Uttar Pradesh. The state government has come under fire for its handling of encounters, with critics accusing the police of targeting specific communities.
