Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by Miami-Dade Police before Sunday’s season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, sparking an investigation into the incident. Video footage shows Hill on the ground and in handcuffs. The officer involved in the incident has been placed on administrative leave.
Hill claims he was not disrespectful and did not curse at the officers. He expressed concern about the potential for racial bias, saying he worried about what might have happened if he wasn’t a famous athlete. Fellow Dolphins player Calais Campbell, who was also briefly detained after coming to Hill’s aid, supported the decision to place the officer on leave.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava acknowledged the incident as a part of America’s ongoing conversation about the use of force. The internal review process is expected to address the concerns raised by the public video footage.
Despite the incident, Hill went on to have a successful game, recording seven receptions for 130 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown. After the game, he celebrated by having a teammate pretend to put him in handcuffs.
