Tue Sep 10 18:38:00 UTC 2024: ## Southern California Wildfires Fueled by Extreme Heat, Threaten Thousands of Homes
Southern California is grappling with a series of major wildfires fueled by several days of triple-digit temperatures. The intense heat has created its own thunderstorm-like weather systems, further exacerbating the situation.
The most significant blaze, burning in Orange County, has consumed over 14 square miles and is spreading rapidly towards Riverside County. The fire, ignited by heavy equipment, has forced evacuations and threatened communications towers, though no disruptions to police or fire communication have been reported so far.
Another large fire in the San Bernardino National Forest has placed over 65,000 homes and buildings under threat. The blaze has charred 41 square miles and is only 5% contained.
Further north, in the Angeles National Forest, a fire has grown to over 4 square miles and remains uncontained, prompting evacuations of a campground and nearby river community.
In Northern California, the Boyles Fire has destroyed at least 30 homes and commercial buildings, forcing thousands to evacuate.
These wildfires are part of a larger pattern across the western US, with blazes also raging in Idaho, Oregon, and Nevada. The Davis Fire near Reno has forced the evacuation of 20,000 people and continues to threaten homes and businesses.
Firefighters hope cooler weather expected later this week will help them gain control of the fires. However, the immediate concern remains the safety of thousands of residents and the preservation of homes and infrastructure threatened by these raging blazes.
