**TORONTO** – Acclaimed director Alfonso Cuarón, known for his Oscar-winning films “Roma” and “Gravity,” has ventured into the world of television with his new psychological thriller, “Disclaimer.” The five-and-a-half-hour series, premiering at the Toronto Film Festival after a successful debut in Venice, takes a cinematic approach, inspired by sprawling works like “Reds” and “Fanny and Alexander.”
“Disclaimer” follows Catherine Ravenscroft, a documentarian played by Cate Blanchett, whose life is turned upside down when she receives a book revealing secrets she desperately wants to keep hidden. The series, narrated in multiple perspectives, explores themes of bias, public shaming, and the manipulation of narratives in the modern world.
Cuarón emphasizes the importance of recognizing how we construct our own narratives, particularly in an era where misinformation and fabricated stories are increasingly prevalent. “The whole question of narrative…is relevant in fiction. But, I think that, more than ever right now, we are experiencing a period in which narratives are taking over…You can see it in the political realm, more and more all the time,” he states.
The series features an all-star cast including Kevin Kline, Sacha Baron Cohen, and a reunion with Cuarón’s longtime cinematographer Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki.
Despite the success of “Disclaimer,” Cuarón admits the project was a demanding one, taking over a year to film due to COVID-related delays. He admits the project was “really draining” for the actors who had to commit to the project for a longer duration than initially expected.
However, the director sees “Disclaimer” as a successful foray into a longer format, exploring the depths of complex themes and characters. He is now looking forward to returning to the shorter format of a 90-minute film, eager to explore new creative avenues.
