Tue Sep 10 18:57:00 UTC 2024: ## SIU Researcher Receives Grant to Tackle “Forever Chemicals” in Groundwater

**CARBONDALE, IL** – A Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU) researcher is leading a groundbreaking effort to combat the threat of PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals”, in groundwater. Dr. Jia Liu, an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, has secured a three-year grant of nearly $500,000 from the National Science Foundation to investigate the use of magnetic nanomaterials in treating contaminated water sources.

Dr. Liu and her team are exploring the development of a pilot-scale treatment unit based on their research, building upon previous grant-funded work in this field. The project focuses on utilizing magnetic nanomaterials and light to break down and remove PFAS, a class of harmful chemicals that persist in the environment and pose serious health risks.

This innovative approach holds significant promise for addressing the growing issue of PFAS contamination, which is impacting water supplies across the country. Dr. Liu’s research has the potential to provide a much-needed solution for restoring clean and safe water for communities.
