Tue Sep 10 23:34:11 UTC 2024: ## Union Minister Accuses Rahul Gandhi of Spreading “Dangerous Narrative” on Sikhs in US

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday condemned Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s remarks about Sikhs in the United States, calling them “sinister” and accusing him of spreading falsehoods among Sikhs abroad.

Puri’s strong condemnation comes after Gandhi’s statement at a gathering of Indian Americans in Virginia on Monday, where he claimed the fight in India is about “whether Sikhs can go to gurdwara or not” and “whether a Sikh is going to be allowed to wear his turban in India or a kada.”

“I condemn in the strongest terms the statement he has made about Sikhs not being able to wear turbans and kadas,” Puri said, highlighting that Gandhi’s words are “setting a dangerous narrative.”

He further accused Gandhi of exploiting the sensitive issue of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, which took place during the Congress rule. “If there has been one time in our history when as a community we have felt anxiety, a sense of insecurity and existential threat, it has been the times when Rahul Gandhi’s family has been in the seats of power,” Puri stated.

“In 1984, a pogrom was carried out against the Sikh community. As many as 3,000 innocent people were killed,” he added, referring to the brutal violence against Sikhs that followed the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Puri criticized Gandhi’s attempt to “set a new narrative” about Sikhs in India, emphasizing the dangers of such statements regarding national identity and unity.
