**New Delhi, Sep 10** – The Union Health Ministry has confirmed that India has recorded 30 cases of Mpox since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the disease a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) in 2022. This comes as the global total of Mpox cases has reached 103,048, with 229 deaths reported across 121 countries between January 2022 and July 2024, according to WHO data.
While Africa remains the most affected region, with 3,900 confirmed cases in 15 countries, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, and Nigeria have the highest number of cases this year. The Ministry highlighted that severe Mpox cases are more common in children and are influenced by factors such as virus exposure, individual health, and potential complications.
Mpox spreads through close contact with an infected person or direct contact with their bodily fluids, lesions, or contaminated items like clothing and linens. The Ministry stressed the importance of preventative measures, including:
* **Avoiding contact with potentially contaminated materials.**
* **Isolating infected individuals.**
* **Practicing good hand hygiene.**
* **Using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when caring for patients.**
* **Properly containing and disposing of contaminated waste.**
The Health Ministry urged the public to remain vigilant and adhere to these preventive measures to mitigate the risk of Mpox transmission.
