Sun Sep 08 00:27:56 UTC 2024: – The central Ministry of Health has approved a new treatment method for Multi Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Program (NTEP).
– The new treatment method, called BPALM, includes a new anti-TB drug called Pretomanid along with Bedaquiline and Linezolid.
– This new method is safer and more effective compared to traditional MDR-TB treatment and can cure MDR-TB in just six months.
– The Ministry aims to provide this new treatment to 75,000 MDR-TB patients in India.
– The old MDR-TB treatment lasts for 20 months and may have harmful side effects.
– Expert reviews have been conducted before approval of this new treatment, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to eliminate TB by 2025.
