**Kolkata, India:** Prominent Bengali filmmaker Arindam Sil has been suspended from the Directors Association of Eastern India (DAEI) following allegations of sexual harassment by an actress. The suspension, effective immediately, is pending an investigation into the claims.
The action against Sil marks the first major disciplinary measure taken against a prominent figure in the Bengali film industry, also known as Tollywood, following a wave of sexual harassment allegations that have shaken the entertainment industry across India.
The actress, whose name has not been released, accused Sil of attempting to kiss her on the cheek during a film shoot. While Sil claims his actions were unintentional, the DAEI, after receiving a complaint from the actress to the West Bengal Commission for Women, decided to suspend him.
Sil appeared before the Women’s Commission on Friday, where he apologized for the incident, stating that he did not intend to cause any offense. He maintains that his colleagues present during the alleged incident would corroborate his claim of unintentional actions.
The DAEI, after consulting with all parties involved, decided to suspend Sil indefinitely until the allegations are cleared.
This incident comes amidst growing calls for accountability in the Bengali film industry. Actress Ritabhari Chakraborty, referencing the Hema Committee report that exposed widespread sexual harassment in the Malayalam film industry, has publicly demanded a similar investigation in Bengal. She has alleged that many of the experiences described in the report mirror her own or those of other actresses, calling for a crackdown on abusive behavior within the industry.
The DAEI’s decision to suspend Sil reflects a growing awareness of the need to address sexual harassment issues within the Bengali film industry. The outcome of the investigation will be closely watched by the industry and the public alike.
