**Colorado Springs, CO** – The Air Force Academy is mourning the loss of Cadet Avery Koonce, 19, who was found unconscious in her dorm room on Wednesday. The cause of death is currently unknown, and authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding her passing.

Koonce, a talented athlete from Texas, was a member of the Air Force Academy’s track and field team and often shared her athletic achievements on social media. She was a 2024 graduate of Thrall High School and had enrolled in the Academy shortly after graduation.

In a heartfelt statement, Koonce’s parents, Eric and Kelly, described their daughter as “an incredible bright light in this broken world.” They expressed their immense grief, saying their “lives will forever be diminished because of her absence.”

Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, U.S. Air Force Academy Superintendent, also paid tribute to Koonce, praising her positive impact on her unit, team, and classmates. “We lost an incredible teammate last night,” he said. “Her loss will be felt across USAFA.”
