Sat Sep 07 23:36:43 UTC 2024: ## Power Cut Off for 54 Homes in Rancho Palos Verdes Due to Land Movement
**RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CA** – An additional 54 homes in the Portuguese Bend Club neighborhood will be without power starting Monday at 6 p.m. due to continued land movement in the area. This comes as around 170 other homes in the area are already without power, including those in the Portuguese Bend neighborhood where power and gas have been cut off for safety reasons.
The decision to cut power to the additional 54 homes was made after Southern California Edison (SCE) officials monitored the land movement, which is occurring at an unprecedented rate of up to a foot per week. The rapid shifting has caused infrastructure damage and safety concerns.
Adding to the residents’ difficulties, Cox Communications will also be disconnecting service to 146 customers in the Portuguese Bend Community Association starting Monday, leaving them without cable television and internet access.
This latest power outage follows a small fire in Portuguese Bend last month, caused by a fallen power line that ignited nearby vegetation. Although the fire was quickly extinguished, the incident highlighted the escalating danger posed by the land movement.
Earlier this week, SoCalGas shut off service to 29 homes in Seaview and 25 homes in the Portuguese Bend Beach Club area due to a gas line break and geological hazard surveys. While SCE has restored power to 75 homes in Seaview, 30 remain without power indefinitely.
In response to the ongoing crisis, the city of Rancho Palos Verdes has set up charging stations for electronic devices at the Ladera Linda Community Center and is working with cellular providers to bring temporary cell facilities to the area. Residents wishing to install temporary backup generators must apply for a permit and submit plans.
The city continues to urge residents who have not already done so to evacuate the affected areas.
