**KLUANG** – The Barisan Nasional (BN) has officially named Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah, the Kluang Umno Youth chief, as their candidate for the upcoming Mahkota by-election. The announcement was made by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi during the launch of the coalition’s election machinery in Kluang on [Date of the launch].
The announcement was met with loud cheers from attendees, including leaders and members of both BN and Pakatan Harapan parties. The Mahkota state seat became vacant following the passing of its assemblywoman, Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, on August 2. Sharifah Azizah had won the seat in the March 2022 Johor state election with a 5,166-vote majority, beating candidates from Perikatan Nasional, Pakatan, and Parti Warisan.
Polling for the by-election is scheduled for September 28, with nomination day set for September 14.
Syed Hussien had previously been reported as one of the frontrunners for the BN candidacy. Perikatan Nasional is expected to announce their candidate shortly. Both coalitions are gearing up for a competitive campaign in the crucial by-election.
