Sun Sep 08 11:59:50 UTC 2024: ## Japan’s Prince Hisahito Reaches Adulthood, Marking a Significant Milestone for the Imperial Family

**Tokyo, Japan** – Prince Hisahito, the nephew of Emperor Naruhito, turned 18 on Friday, becoming the first male member of the Japanese royal family to reach adulthood in nearly four decades. This milestone holds significant weight for the centuries-old Imperial family, currently facing challenges due to its dwindling male lineage.

Hisahito, who is expected to one day ascend the throne, is the youngest of the 17-member imperial family, comprised of only four men. His father, Crown Prince Akishino, was the last male royal to reach adulthood in 1985.

According to the 1947 Imperial House Law, only male members can inherit the throne, and female members who marry commoners lose their royal status. This conservative law, rooted in pre-war family values, has sparked debate regarding the future of the monarchy, especially since Princess Aiko, Emperor Naruhito’s daughter, is widely popular and seen as a suitable candidate for empress. However, current legislation forbids her from assuming this role.

Despite the challenges, Prince Hisahito has expressed his desire to “cherish his remaining time in high school” before taking on his future responsibilities. He has a passion for insects, even co-authoring an academic paper on dragonfly research.

His official Coming-of-Age ceremony and accompanying press conference are scheduled for spring 2025 or later, following his high school graduation.

In 2022, a government-commissioned panel proposed allowing female members to maintain their royal status after marriage and adopting male descendants from defunct royal families to expand the male lineage. This proposal, however, remains under consideration.

With Emperor Naruhito at the helm, followed by Crown Prince Akishino and Prince Hisahito in line for the throne, the future of the Imperial family continues to be a topic of intense discussion and debate. As Prince Hisahito enters adulthood, the nation awaits his transition into a role that will ultimately shape the future of the Japanese monarchy.
