**Khartoum, Sudan** – Hundreds of families fled a northern suburb of Sudan’s capital Khartoum on Saturday after fighting between the army and paramilitary forces intensified around a key military base, witnesses reported. The fighting, which began in April 2023, has already killed tens of thousands and displaced millions, creating one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
The latest escalation occurred near the Hattab base in Khartoum North, where the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked on Wednesday. Witnesses described heavy artillery fire and aerial bombardment in the area, with the RSF reportedly targeting civilians and capturing residents.
The UN has called for the deployment of an independent force to protect civilians, citing “harrowing” violations by both sides that may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The conflict has also caused a severe humanitarian crisis, with over 25 million people facing acute hunger. Full-blown famine has been declared in a camp for displaced people in Darfur.
Meanwhile, World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is on a two-day visit to Port Sudan, the de facto seat of government since the fighting forced authorities out of Khartoum. He is expected to meet with officials and visit health facilities.
