– Preeti Sudan has been appointed as the new Chairperson of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and will take office on August 1, 2024
– Her appointment is sanctioned under Article 316A of the Indian Constitution following the resignation of ex-chairperson Manoj Soni
– Sudan has been a member of the UPSC since November 29, 2022 and will serve as Chairperson until her retirement in April 2025
– Her appointment was approved by President Droupadi Murmu and announced in a formal letter to UPSC Secretary Shashi Ranjan Kumar
– Manoj Soni resigned for personal reasons, despite having his term scheduled to end in 2029
– Preeti Sudan brings approximately 37 years of government administration experience, including serving as Union Health Secretary during the COVID-19 pandemic
– She has also held significant positions in ministries of Defense and Women and Child Development, as well as international experience as a consultant for the World Bank.
