One-Day Itinerary for Hemkund Sahib – Uttarakhand
Hemkund Sahib is a highly revered Sikh pilgrimage site located in the state of Uttarakhand, in the midst of the scenic Himalayas. This one-day itinerary will take you through the essential places and activities to make the most of your visit to Hemkund Sahib.
6:00 am – Start the day with a serene drive from Joshimath to Govindghat (24 km, 1 hour)
– Enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and lush green valleys
– Take a light breakfast on the way or carry packed food along with you
7:30 am – Start the trek from Govindghat to Ghangaria (around 13 km, 6-7 hours)
– This picturesque trek passes through picturesque villages, pine forests, and roaring waterfalls
– Carry water bottles, energizing snacks, raincoats, sunscreen, trekking shoes, and a hat for protection from the sun
– Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the trek
2:30 pm – Reach Ghangaria and have lunch at one of the local restaurants
– Ghangaria serves as the base camp for Hemkund Sahib and is surrounded by beautiful landscape
3:30 pm – Begin the steep ascent from Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib (6 km, 3-4 hours)
– Wear proper clothing to cover your head, as it is mandatory in the gurdwara
– Keep a scarf or shawl handy to cover your shoulders while entering the gurdwara
– The trek is challenging but rewarding, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers
7:00 pm – Arrive at Hemkund Sahib and pay your respects at the gurdwara
– Take some time to soak in the spiritual ambiance and seek blessings
– The gurdwara is situated next to a pristine glacial lake, believed to possess healing properties
8:00 pm – Begin descending back to Ghangaria
– Carry flashlights or headlamps, as the trail can get dark
– Watch your step and be cautious while descending the steep path
9:00 pm – Return to Ghangaria and have dinner at one of the local restaurants
– Relax and unwind after a strenuous day of trekking

Historical Importance:
Hemkund Sahib holds immense historical and religious significance for Sikhs. It is believed to be the place where Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru,meditated and attained enlightenment. The gurdwara at Hemkund Sahib is situated at an altitude of around 4,300 meters and is a symbol of communal harmony and spirituality. The glacial lake next to the gurdwara is believed to be the location where Guru Gobind Singh performed penance in his previous life.
